The Natural Park of the Maritime Alps is located away from the big mountain resorts of the Alps. The park is dotted with crystal clear lakes which are a wonder for those who discover them, true shards of sky fallen to earth. Wolves roam freely and the large birds of prey dominate its air. The chamois, ibexes and marmots that inhabit it can be seen along its paths, and its meadows are home to species of flowers found nowhere else in the world. The park is a wild garden for those who love the solitude of the mountains and nature, where the mind can wander away from the hectic world.
The Park is located less than 50km away (as the crow flies) from the French Côte d’Azur and includes wild and rugged mountains rising over 3’000 meters (24 peaks), spectacular glacial cirques and 80 mountain lakes with crystal clear waters. It is crisscrossed by 3 valleys and spans 280 square kilometers.
The Park was founded on the territory of ancient hunting reserves of the king of Italy. Three generations of kings succeeded one another, contributing to the creation of a multitude of trails (over 400km), refuges and bivouacs now used for hiking and mountaineering.
The great Bearded Vulture (also named Lammergeier; 3 meters wingspan) was reintroduced into the Maritime Alps in the nineties. Together with the wolf and the golden eagle, it represents a spectacular example of the wildlife of the Park. Among the thousands of different flower species to be found in the Park, 50 of them are endemic (cannot be found anywhere else in the world).
