Edinburgh, capital of Scotland, is a city full of life, culture and tradition. Its thousand-year-old castle has dominated its history and stands out on the horizon, no matter which way you look. The malty smells of the surrounding distilleries mark the city with their presence and give it an old-fashioned charm that is recognizable by all. In Edinburgh, cultural festivals follow one another throughout the year, from the most classical to the most iconoclastic, culminating in the summer with the Edinburgh Art Festival and its alter ego, the Fringe, where the craziest performances take place. Edinburgh is a constant experience for all the senses not to be missed.
Edinburgh is now affectionately nicknamed Auld Reekie by the Scots. This nickname comes from centuries past and means, in Scottish dialect, Old Smokey. In fact,it referred to the terrible air pollution caused by the open fires burning in the buildings and houses of the city, which covered Edinburgh with thick smoke that could be seen from the surrounding countryside.
Edinburgh is one of the favourite filming locations of the famous Scottish director Danny Boyle, who shot three films there (Shallow Grave - 1985, Trainspotting - 1996, Trainspotting 2 - 2017) and revealed the star Ewan McGregor.
